I’m not a master of sportswear fabrics so making swimwear has always seemed daunting to me. Mainly because I’ve seen them whip up bikinis in professional production lines and let me tell you, those sewing machines can’t even be compared to home machines. I thought it would simply be stupid to even try it at home.
And yet here we are. I have a bag full of half-finished bikinis. No industrial machine. I can do this!
I thought using a scuba fabric instead of lycra would be genius. And it is, in terms of cutting and sewing – so much easier. I just didn’t realise you can’t use regular elastic for the edges. You definitely need that clear, thin stuff.
So I’m waiting for my elastic order to arrive. In the meanwhile, here are some pictures of what I’m working on. Can you see how nicely the scuba fabric on top behaves – clean edges, holds its shape. The one on the bottom was sold to me as scuba but I think it’s just slightly thicker nylon lycra. Creases like you wouldn’t believe, impossible to iron, edges curl up.
